Which screen-free Advent activities can you do with kids?

24 ideas, one a day. All can be done at home, in under an hour.

Updated November 4, 2026 · 5 minute read

In short. One activity a day, 20 to 30 minutes, at the same hour. Mix calm and movement. Keep the busy days for the simplest ideas.

Why do a screen-free Advent?

December is full of noise and lights. Kids get excited. A small screen-free ritual adds one calm moment each day.

It is not a strict rule. An audio story counts as a screen-free moment: the child listens and looks at nothing.

What are the 24 Advent activities to do as a family?

For the hands (days 1 to 8)

  1. Listen to door 1 of the audio calendar, then draw the favorite scene.
  2. Make a paper garland.
  3. Color a Christmas page. Free coloring pages are waiting.
  4. Decorate cookies.
  5. Write a letter to Santa.
  6. Fold paper stars.
  7. Make greeting cards for the family.
  8. Build a nativity scene with things from home.

To move (days 9 to 16)

  1. A treasure hunt with one clue per room.
  2. A Christmas dance in the living room.
  3. A walk to see the lights in the neighborhood.
  4. A game of statues to Christmas music.
  5. A reindeer race: jump from one cushion to the next.
  6. A paper snowball fight.
  7. A charades game with Christmas characters.
  8. A trip to the Christmas market, or to the park if it is sunny.

For the heart (days 17 to 24)

  1. Call a grandparent and tell them about the day.
  2. Sort three toys to give away.
  3. Prepare a snack for a neighbor.
  4. Write a kind note to a friend.
  5. Read or hear a story together under a blanket.
  6. Bake a cake for the 24th.
  7. Set the festive table together.
  8. Listen to the last door and say thank you for the year.

How do you last 24 days without burning out?

  • Prepare on one Sunday. List the ideas and the supplies.
  • On busy days, use a very short idea: a 3-minute audio story.
  • Let the child draw the idea at random. They get more involved.
  • If a day is skipped, move on to the next. Nobody is grading you.

Which calendar can hold these ideas?

Write each idea on a slip of paper, in 24 envelopes. Or take the audio Advent calendar: one story a day, with the child's name. It is the backbone. The other ideas come on top. The stories are in French first. English is coming next.

Frequently asked questions

Which Advent activity for a 3-year-old?

Pick coloring, the paper garland or a 3-minute audio story. Stay next to them.

How much time should I plan each day?

Between 10 and 30 minutes. A longer activity can move to the weekend.

Does an audio story count as screen-free time?

Yes. The child listens. They do not look at a screen. Turn the phone off or flip it over while they listen.

Can I do these with kids of different ages?

Yes. Give each child a role: the older one reads the clues, the younger one colors. The game becomes shared.
