Emma and Theo - The Mysterious Attic is book one of a brand new Starsbox comic book series for children. Twenty-four pages, built from the ground up for early readers, ages 5 and up. It is a comic book for kids ages 5 in the fullest sense: only a few words per page, images that carry the story, and a plot a young child can follow before they can even read.
The story: a locked trunk, a missing key
It has been raining since breakfast. Emma, eight, and Theo, five, wander around the living room until Emma spots the hatch in the ceiling, the one nobody ever opens. Up they go into the attic, among wooden beams, white sheets and cobwebs. Under the last sheet sits a brown trunk, closed with a golden padlock. No key in sight.
What follows is a treasure hunt inside a single room: a music box, an old rocking horse, a photo album where Emma recognizes her grandmother's smile as a little girl, a suitcase of baby clothes. None of it holds the key. It is Theo, the little brother, who finally finds it, sewn inside an old teddy bear. The trunk opens onto twenty-four small lanterns and a hand-drawn treasure map from their grandmother, with one line: "One lantern each night. At the end, the thing I hid."
Why this comic book for kids ages 5 has no villain
It is a rule for the whole Starsbox series, not just this book: no villain, ever. The story never runs on danger, only on a puzzle to solve together. The tension comes from the search, never from fear. A five-year-old can follow this comic book without a single image that might worry them, which is exactly what many parents look for in a first comic book.
The choice of characters matters too. Emma is the big sister: she is the one who dares to open the hatch, who decides to search the whole attic instead of giving up. Theo is the little brother: he is the one who is scared of the dark and says so out loud, but he is also the one who notices what nobody else sees, and he is the one who finds the key in the end. For a child who often feels like "the little one" of the family, that ending matters.
Who it's for: ages 5 to 8, a comic book made to read aloud
The book was written to be read aloud, as a family. Sentences are short, there are only a few words on each page, and the pictures do most of the talking. A five-year-old can follow the pictures alone and guess the story. A seven or eight-year-old starts reading the words themselves. A grown-up can do the voices of Emma and Theo, which turns bedtime reading into a small performance.
How to read this comic book aloud with your child
A few simple ideas to get the most out of it: let your child describe what they see on each page before you read the text, switch voices between Emma and Theo so each one becomes recognizable, and pause on the twenty-four lanterns on the final page to ask your child what they imagine comes next. It is also a good way to set up book two, in which Emma and Theo follow the treasure map, one lantern and one stop at a time.
Available in six languages, for the whole family
Emma and Theo - The Mysterious Attic exists in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. That makes it easy to gift the same story to cousins who speak a different language, or to slip the French edition into the backpack of a child learning the language at school.
The paperback edition, sold on Amazon
Beyond the digital version, Emma and Theo - The Mysterious Attic also exists as a real paperback, sold on Amazon, in the same format as other Starsbox books: built to fit small hands and survive a bedtime reading again and again.
